EndocrinologySmoke-free Mumbai Sticker Campaign
Sticker campaign builds awareness for smoke-free Mumbai
Nearly 50,000 colourful no-smoking stickers in English and Marathi were provided to Mumbai"s 24 wards during March as part of the Smoke Free Mumbai campaign. The project developed by The Union"s South-East Asia Office in collaboration with the World Lung Foundation (WLF) aims to raise public awareness of India"s smoke-free rules.
The stickers supplement the "No Smoking" signs mandated by law and were designed to be displayed in private establishments ranging from restaurants to educational institutions. As part of the project, ward health officers and sanitary workers were trained on the need for clear "No smoking" signage, the way to identify the best sites to display this signage, the need to comply with the law and the penalties for non-compliance.
In the second phase, The Union and the WLF will coordinate with the Action Council against Tobacco (ACT) and the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and other local non-governmental organisations to assess the impact of the project. A survey will gather information on the actual number of stickers displayed and community awareness of the smoke-free law. Organisers plan to extend this project to other large cities in India over the coming months.
Funding for this project was provided by the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use. To learn more about The Union"s tobacco control activities, please go to http://www.tobaccofreeunion.org.
